On this episode, I leave the tech world to speak to Ziyanda Khumalo about her career change: From marketing in Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), to Finance and Investment Banking.
Ziyanda started her career as a management trainee at British American Tobacco (BAT). In many ways, it looked like the start of a great marketing career. After all, she was in a role coveted by many university graduates. She was also earning a relatively good salary very early into her career. But she wasn’t happy!
Ziyanda left BAT to join another FMCG company called Snackworks. But not long after this move, she realized that she was in the wrong industry. She also realized that marketing would never bring her joy.
As a marketer myself, I was really impressed by Ziyanda’s career change. Not only had she successfully nagivated a career change, but she’d also pivoted into a very different job function and a very different industry. Whether or not you’re thinking of doing the same, I’m sure you’ll find Ziyanda’s story as inspiring as I did!

Quotes from the Episode
When you’ve put so much energy and effort into something, you want to get the returns. And when you call it quits, you will no longer see those returns, right? And that was the reason I stayed in marketing for so long. Even when I knew that… this wasn’t for me.
The longer you stay in a situation where you’re unhappy, the longer you’re delaying your happiness.
If you’re just building towards something that you don’t feel you’re going to feel satisfied in, it is not worth it.
No matter how you live your life, people will always have an opinion on it. So at the end of the day you need to do something that will make you happy.
