Career Queens Podcast is a business podcast that spotlights career conversations with millennial women making moves in tech
From product management, to people management! In this episode, Tracy Jasper, a manager at Hubspot, talks about her experience transitioning from an individual contributor to a people manager in the tech industry. Tune in to hear about the challenges Tracy faced, as well as the people management skills she’s had to develop.
In many tech companies, becoming a people manger is neither a promotion, nor the only way to advance one’s career. In fact, there are often parallel tracks for people interested in individual contributor or manager work. That said, becoming a people manager is often a strategic move because, to progress to Director and VP level, one almost always needs to have this experience under their belt.

Quotes from the episode on moving into people management
The things that made you successful as an IC (individual contributor), are not always the things that are going to make you successful as a manager.
There are a couple of skills that I think are hard to get right, and they’re probably a constant source of growth for all people managers. [For instance], when you’re an IC, the amount of detail and the amount of deep level of subject matter expertise is really different from the amount that’s expected of you as a people manager. But it’s never really clear exactly where the line is.
Quotes from the episode on ‘dream jobs’
I don’t have a dream job because I don’t dream of working. I dream of having a fulfilled, full life that brings me a lot of joy. And work is just a part of that.
I like to use the metaphor of soul mates when I talk about dream jobs… I don’t believe dream jobs exist, and I don’t believe soul mates exist… there are a lot of jobs and there are a lot of people that can make you happy.
